San Marino's Three Flowers Face Europe Again
A part-time club from a castello of a few hundred people meets Northern Ireland's champions in qualifying
A narrow road climbs out of the valley toward Fiorentino, past terraced vineyards gone gold in the July heat, and ends at a small stadium wedged between hillside and sky. Somewhere below, the flags of San Marino's nine castelli snap in a mild Adriatic wind. Tonight this particular castello, population a few hundred, hosts a club carrying the whole republic's footballing hopes into a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Northern Irish champions Larne. The scale is almost comic until you remember Tre Fiori have made a habit of comedy turning serious.
