ETO Park sits along the Rába's edge, a self-funded stadium the club paid for out of its own pocket after the bankruptcy years. Fans arriving from the Belváros side pass paprika-red awnings on the market stalls, langos frying in oil that spits and pops in the evening heat. Nobody in Győr is talking about Reykjavík's weather. They are talking about a stoppage-time goal.

That goal belonged to Nikolaj Hansen, scored deep into the ninth minute of injury time in a stadium the size of a large village hall. Víkingur Reykjavík, champions of a nation of fewer than four hundred thousand people, left Iceland with the away leg won 1-0 and the tie theirs to lose. For a club whose home ground sits under a volcanic sky rather than a Danubian one, that lead travels a long way.

Győri ETO carry their own improbable arc into the second leg.
